It's stated that around the year 280 A.D., there was a person born by the name of Nicolas. He was born in the Near East in a town called Patara. To get it today, look on a chart or even a world for the nation of Turkey, near Greece. It was there that the man who would become Santa Claus was born.

Nicolas had a big heart, so big he became a and devoted himself to his god and his faith. But Nicolas also was a big fan of his neighbors and his family, and he also committed himself to them. Word spread in his homeland and far and wide about how generous and kind Nicolas was. Nicolas was born into money, and reports soon spread about how exactly Nicolas gave away all his family's money to poor people, the sick, and anyone else he came across who needed it.

He became therefore popular that Nicolas was called the defender of kiddies (and sailors too). Once, he even saved three little girls, sisters, from being sold in to slavery by their father. Their father, you see, required money, and would make a fortune by trying to sell his daughters. Instead, Nicolas found their rescue by providing the father money for girls, and then setting them free.

Number wonder that Nicolas became Saint Nicolas after his death. For more than 100 years, He was celebrated by Europeans on the date of his death, December 6. Some even say that Saint Nick was the most popular saint in every of Europe during the end of the Center Ages. December 6 was always considered a lucky day with this very same reason.

How did Saint Nick go from being the protector of children to Jolly Old Saint Nick, the person we all know as Santa Claus, who not just shields children, but gives them great presents also? Well, that's one heck of a long story, and it requires a, and baby Jesus. We probably all already know just that history by heart.

But everything you may well not know is that the conclusion of December was already a big deal in Europe before Xmas was started. It was during this period of year that many Europeans celebrated that winter was almost over. They'd have great feasts, celebrated the harvest of their beer and their wine, and the coming of spring and sunlight. So then it made sense that when people also began celebrating the birth of Baby Jesus, that the 2 cultures could combine.

The thought of celebrating and eating a holiday of lights, the happiness and providing of Saint Nick, and the hope and love produced by Baby Jesus, all of it joined to make the perfect holiday: Xmas. And who makes sure that it happens each year? None other than Santa Claus.
