She earned critical acclaim.<br><br>"An ambitious debut feature,Mulberry outlet," The Wall Street Journal declared. "Politically sophisticated and ethically serious," said The New York Times. "Remember her name. She's a genuine find," added Rolling Stone.<br><br> But the 40-something Hamilton — who spent more than a decade getting her "labor of love" about former Black Panthers "who have ghosts they carry around with them, this past they're afraid of and this fear that they might not be relevant in the future" — realizes that her movie is, to Hollywood,burberry borsa, "only as good as the money that you make with it. If you don't make a lot of money, how do you make your next film?"<br><br>"Night Catches Us" — despite glowing reviews, despite starring and — has earned only about $60,000 at the box office. It screens Saturday at the in and comes out on Feb. 1.<br><br>Hamilton's story, she realizes, isn't a unique tale of the struggles of an indie filmmaker. But she was the only black female filmmaker at Sundance last year. And she succeeded in doing something few first-time feature directors pull off — a period piece with political undertones, name stars, a big-name group (The Roots) doing the soundtrack and a theatrical release.<br><br>"I wanted to tell a handful of character's stories set against a historical-political backdrop," she says. Mackie () plays a former Panther who left town after being accused of betraying his comrades to the police but who comes home years later for his father's funeral. Washington ( "The Last King of Scotland") plays the widow of a Panther leader killed in a shootout,ray ban sunglasses, a single mom and working lawyer who kept her idealism.<br><br>"What I found most fascinating was this idea of among revolutionaries,borse burberry," Hamilton says. "The people I know like that are very complicated and interesting and layered — neither good nor bad, just interesting."<br><br>She set her movie in her adopted hometown of , a city "not known for the Black Panthers" but still with a tortured racial history, whose police force in the '70s and '80s was notorious for being in open conflict with its black community.<br><br>Hamilton thought about filming in Washington,ray ban wayfarer, D.C.,ralph lauren, "which I knew better than Philly. But our budget needed a place that didn't look updated since the mid-70s."<br><br>They filmed in the Germantown neighborhood — "a historic area,hogan sito ufficiale, a lovely area, but one in decline. Hamilton landed Mackie for her leading man, and because he had worked with Washington before ("She Hate Me"), she signed on, too.<br><br>The film's idealism to some degree mirrors that of its filmmaker. Hamilton doesn't want "to take another 10 years to make another movie." But if the project isn't a labor of love, she wonders, "why do it?"<br><br>"How do I write a screenplay that balances art and commerce? How do you create a vessel that has your heart and ideas and politics in it and make money with it?"<br><br>She doesn't know,scarpe hogan, but as her debut feature reaches DVD stores, she is pondering that.<br><br>"I have a lot of ideas for projects, but I haven't started raising the money for that yet.
