Its up to you really. The secnod gears had some major plot points in terms of the storyline, but realistically the third game should catch you up on where the story currently is. Its a fun single player campaign so I would recommend renting it and playing through, but it might be kind of a waste to buy since the multiplayer isn't very great in my opinion.
