Cameron Nino is nine years old. We currently saw him at an open mic in North Hollywood, and he rocked the home. His performance of the late superb Bob Marley's Redemption Song was unbelievably fresh and heart warming. It was a really touching performance and truly inspirational. The host could not help yet refer to him as mini Marley. Now, that's an absolute complement. After his performace the host of the open mic commented that it would be hard for any one else to follow the performance.
So, we decided to get in touch with his mom and dad and had the opportunity to consult with him. Cameron Nino was born on November 25, 2003 at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles to actress Kimmarie Johnson. He'll be beginning 5th Grade this school year. Cameron Nino began playing the guitar in 2011, just before he turned eight. Cameron recalls that his mother asked him to pick what instrument he wish to understand how to play and he select the guitar. Asked why he find the guitar, he said that it was simply fun and he loves the sounds he can certainly make with it. He recalls that he didn't do several playing in his first year simply because he did not own a guitar. In June 2012, he finally got his 1st guitar - a Fender Stratocaster.
This nine year old also writes his own songs. He recent times did an adaptation of the primary theme song from Beverly Hills Cop that he titled Back In The Day. He smiled as he described how he came up with the idea to do the adaptation. He recalled that the primary theme song for Beverly Hills Cop was one of the first songs he learned to play. As he was preparing for a rock show, he decided he wanted to rap as well as play the guitar. He chose the theme song for Beverly Hills Cop as the hook for his rap song. He then developed the lyrics aroung the subject of global warming, which he had just learned in school.
Cameron Nino claimed he chose to talk about global warming in the lyrics for Back In The Day since he wanted to contribute to the discussion of how society can change our ingrained habits which are destroying the ecological system and the environment. The lyrics pull from info he learned in school about pre-historic times when Dinosaurs roamed the planet, the imaginative abilities of children to locate objects naturally, like stones, that they can play with and how individuals used to capture animals from the wild and use them for travelling. This very imaginative and creative nine year old pieced all this info together in a song that's dynamically catchy and highly entertaining, yet very compelling in its argument for us to change our habits so we can make the planet better.
When he's not writing songs or honing his guitar playing skills, Cameron Nino claimed he loves to play video games on his Wii-U console. He also spends time making YouTube videos for his gaming channel on youtube - TheEpicGamer567. He told us that he has learned that lots of video games have severe brain washing capabilities. His interpretation of Bob Marley's Redemption Song is a direct appeal to individuals, specifically children, to be mindful to stay away from being brain wahsed by the video games. He drew a paralled between Bob Marley's call to "emancipate yourselves from mental slavery" and the brain washing characteristics resultant from playing all these games.
We also learned that Cameron Nino has worked on a couple of film tasks. He fairly recently worked with author and artist James Mihaley on a film based upon Jim Mihaley's book "You Can't Have My Planet Yet Take My Brother, Please". The book is recently listed as 'Best Book Of The Year' by the Bank Street College of Schooling in NYC.
